COURSE DESCRIPTION

Goldwork threads hold so much potential to explore movement, flow and line in embroidery, and on this creative course we will delve into the many possibilities of stitch and drawing to entwine and influence each other.

Throughout the weekend, you will build up your own unique series of hand embroidery samples and drawings which will become a tool kit of techniques and explorations to further your creativity and enhance your practice. With a balance of technique and experimentation, there is plenty of ‘breathing space’ left for you to discover your own response to the historical techniques of goldwork. Suitable for all levels of stitch experience.

HANNY NEWTON

Hanny is known for her contemporary approach to goldwork embroidery. Since studying at the Royal School of Needlework (2011-13) she has been fascinated by the inherent qualities of metal threads, and has a deep belief in the importance of innovation and self-expression to keeping crafts alive.

From her studio in Shropshire, she works internationally with interior designers and art consultancies, applying her creative approach to historical techniques to large-scale projects for hotels and private residences around the world. She was awarded the QEST Broderers Company Scholar 2023, and the winner of the inaugural Sanderson QEST Rising Star Craft Award 2024. She teaches her contemporary approach to goldwork at internationally, including at Westdean College, Hand&Lock, the British Museum, and to embroidery groups internationally.
