Course Description
Kantha is a Bangladeshi word for cloth and a particular way of stitching embroidered quilts made from the good parts of old worn-out saris. Old traditional kantha feature a wealth of images eloquently drawn with running stitch. These images are filled in with pattern and colour and then surrounded with the rippling quilted textures unique to kantha.
Dorothy will show you some traditional and contemporary examples and will lead you into stitching a kantha based on your own designs. Fruit and flowers, leaves and seeds, working tools and everyday objects, birds or animals or fish all provide interesting shapes and a personal story.
